Partnering for Higher Education Scholarships: Xavier Cooper, GTCF Fundholder

Over the past 38 years, Greater Tacoma Community Foundation has seen Pierce County grow and change, but what has remained constant is the passion people bring to building a thriving community. Sharing community knowledge and stories about our lived experiences builds everyone’s ability to make a positive impact.

In our latest annual book of Pierce County Partners, we share stories and insights from individuals and organizations who are making a difference in Pierce County. In their own words, they speak about the dreams and lessons that fuel their work in the community.

Xavier Cooper, born and raised in Tacoma, graduated from Wilson High School. Before earning a football scholarship to Washington State University, he attended Tacoma Community College. After 3 successful seasons, Xavier declared for the NFL draft. In 2015, he was selected in the 3rd round and played four years.

“The incentive football provided me was a blessing. I want to provide youth an incentive to opportunity – scholarships to pursue higher education.”

“At 14 years old, I was diagnosed with learning disabilities. I struggled socially and educationally to comprehend. I know personally the barriers to meet academic standards.”

Xavier is working with Greater Tacoma Community Foundation to establish the Xavier Cooper – Everyone Learns Differently Scholarship Fund, which will help youth who are challenged with learning disabilities pursue higher education.

“GTCF has a great reputation with phenomenal leadership. They’re helping make connections to shape and form my vision. I want to collaborate in sharing my passion for these youth.”

“The incentive football provided me was a blessing. I want to provide youth an incentive to opportunity – scholarships to pursue higher education. Words from Nelson Mandela, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’”
“These youth are special. I will be a resource who encourages their dreams.”
